The FET Open project Lumiblast, in which we at accelopment are proudly involved in, has just won the Innovation Radar Prize 2019 for Innovative Science. After the project has reached the top three of its category “Innovative Science” in a public vote, the Lumiblast coordinating team from Oslo University Hospital, represented by Prof. Kristian Berg and Dr. Theodossis Theodossiou, got the chance to pitch the project in Brussels in front of a jury. Congratulations! They won over their competitors Space Structures and the Max Planck Institute of molecular plant physiology in their category. The overall winner of all four categories (Innovative Science, Industrial & Enabling Tech, Women-led innovations, and Tech for Society) was the Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana (SUPSI, Switzerland).

The Lumiblast project

Lumiblast is a technology for generating light inside cancer cells, as modelled in hard to reach and cure brain cancers (glioblastoma multiforme), with a particular focus on efficient activation of photosensitizers by light, to generate deleterious reactive oxygen species, specifically in cancer cells. The goal of the Technology is to develop a minimally-invasive clinical treatment, only requiring intravenous injections, potentially without any surgical intervention.

FET Open brings your project further

The Horizon 2020 FET Open (Future and Emerging Technologies) projects are set out to challenge current thinking and pave the way for innovations and radical new ideas. FET Open is a very attractive platform for innovative and ground-breaking technologies like that of Lumiblast that are in the concept stage but have not achieved proof-of-principle yet. Outside FET it is difficult to nurture such high risk/high gain projects in conventional funding schemes. FET has offered Lumiblast the opportunity to reach a proof-of principal preclinical stage, which has paved the way for the team to further translate Lumiblast into the clinic in the longer term. Moreover, FET Open is a prestigeous scheme within Horizon 2020, which can enhance your project’s visibility to the research, academic and industry communities, resulting in new collaborations and possibilities to disseminate results.

accelopment and FET Open

accelopment has a long experience in this highly competitive call (FETOPEN-01-2018-2019-2020). In the final year in H2020,  the FET Open Research and Innovation Actions benefits from a budget higher than those of 2018 and 2019 combined: 354.2 million euro are available and with project budgets of about 3 million each, more than 115 projects are likely to be funded. We would be happy to support you in the proposal preparation and as a project partner for project management and dissemination support as we do in several FET projects, such as Lumiblast, FRINGE, CLASSY and macQsimal. Get ready with us for the last cut off for FET Open Research and Innovation Actions on 13 May 2020 and contact us.
